I saw that ASUS has already readied an updated replacement for this eee PC 701 that will include WiMax among other things like a bigger 8.9 in screen and longer battery life. http://www.pmptoday.com/2008/01/01/asus ... n-readied/

more info, including Win XP confirmation, from CES via
engadget

The "exit interview" with Bill Gates on the engadget site is almost poignant.

mmm, I can get a "downloaded" copy of XP. Will this work? If I have to buy a copy, how much?

Nam,
Will you supply a 8Gb unit, ready with XP or this XP trimmed down version? I want the Chinese version of XP. How much would that cost?
Are you sure that I can run all the apps I mentioned before?

:notworthy: eee pc

Sorry for the late reply, but it seems that email notification of topic updates isn't getting to me.
Fortunately another member made it a point to let me know that there were some questions being asked of me here.

I'd suggest that you wait another month for the windows version of the eee PC if that's what you really need.
You can definately run everything you mentioned on it, though again, storage is an issue.

For anyone considering modding, remember that unless the flash drive is pci-e bus, it won't be recognized the same way (ie; it's still just recognized as a removable drive because it's on the USB bus)
This makes for less than optimal performance. Windows also writes to the temp folder on the main drive on a constant basis.
So if you are downloading something, it has to go through the temp folder on the system drive before it's copied to whatever other drive you have your internet downloads set to go to.
So if you drive is 20GB or even 1000TB in capacity, it won't matter.

That being said, the 8GB version is enough to run a scaled down version windows at acceptable efficiency.

The cost of the Windows machines has yet to be announced, but I will be carrying them as soon as they are released.
I have 30 on order so far.

BTW, ms says the delay in shipping the eee WinXP version is optimizing XP to boot from a SSD. So, the OE Win eee should be faster than buying the Linux eee and nLite-ing XP.

That's exactly right!

Although, they've been slow out of the gate on this from the beginning.

Somewhat interesting comparison. If only the one on the left was as inexpensive as the eee.

The one on the left is equal to 5 or 6 of the eee pcs :(

Anyone waiting for eee PCs with windows systems may be be interested to know that the 4GB systems are now out on the market.

Selling for $15,000 I believe, with 4GB SD(SDHC) memory chip and laser mouse included in the package.

Please message, email or call me if you'd like one.

Does the install include any software on XP?

The Xandros install includes pretty much everything I'd ever need... but the XP install usually starts with NOTHING!

And how would software be added, since there's no CD-ROM!

My systems will come with open office as well as ghostwall firewall and AVG anti-virus.

Not to mention a few others.

Software can be installed via USB flash drive or external laser drive.
The eee PC has 3 USB ports
