So that's pretty much all of Hull's good points summed up then.

But hold on. Didn't the Housemartins come from Hull? Oh. Right, I see what you mean.
The mood was as dark as the clouds swirling around the town's famous hat museum yesterday.

That is Hull's bad points.

The good points are its fantastic fish and chips. Although don't ask anyone where they are from while lining up. Especially if you have a pony tail.

Tell ya what......let's adverb up them Ahh Dee Jayz. I am passionately hyperbolic, proudly Anti-american, and rabidly Anti-christian. I am not so much of a pacifist to not want to bomb the bemohameds and bejeezuses outta fundamentalists who would invoke violence on innocence or cut the cajones off an abuser of same. Nor am I so peaceful as to cower from a good verbal dust-up. But I'll only use words for fists. Not fists for words.

The liberal view of live and let live, the eco view of footprint, the tech view of RAM, all suitable metaphors for how I assess each decision I make.

Nah, I am not trolling Tainan Ch....erm.....Cowboy. I am not posting tidbits of trash journalism hoping to incite a flame war. I don't overuse the popcorn icon, wringing my buttery hands in glee, cybernecking my way into cataclysmic exxxx-tasy.....

No, I am arguing with the guy whom, in my opinion, incited, ergo attacked a disabled local. A man, who, truth be known, has been an officer of the law and should know better. Perhaps the demon rum got him that night. Or another, when he confessed his part in vile wrongdoings.....

I know from whence I speak.............. :raspberry:

A female point of view. I have never hit anyone (except my sister after she did something unspeakable to my dolls' house and ***** ****** because he is a dirty slut with no soul). It tends to be counter-productive when you are 5'2" so the 'luxury' of whether or not to punch someone in the face is not mine.

Fortunately I speak four languages and can repel irritating males in all of them. However, diplomacy is often required to maintain my dignity.

Dunno. 'Protecting the honour of the womanfolk' sounds kind of silly. Can't think of many instances where it would be appreciated.

People react how they react, though. Who knows what we'd all do?

I see your point, Buttercup, but I'm not sure that 'protecting the honour of the womanfolk' was the issue here was it? From the description of the events we have, Enigma did not throw the punch because Pony Tail insulted Enigma's wife. In fact, he initiated no violence at all in response to the insults to his wife. His punch came later, and was a response to being physically attacked by Pony Tail. Old-fashioned macho notions of 'protecting a woman's honour' may or may not be silly, but it doesn't sound to me like it was the reason that Enigma hit this guy... :idunno:

Ok, the OP was way back. I remember someone else using it as a justification.

Not judging anyone, just offering a different point of view.

I'd probably have been much ruder, precisely because he wouldn't have swung at me.

Dunno what I'd have done. If the guy was really fucked up and not a threat, I probably would have tried to de-escalate the situation... but, I don't blame the OP for uttering the "mama" comment. The guy was being a total jerk, and his invasion, even if only verbal at that point, was unwelcome. Once the guy threw a punch at the OP, all bets were off, in my book... we can analyse all we want... if the guy had swung wildly and missed due to obvious inebriation/stonage, I would probably have sought an easy retreat. But, the guy didn't miss... he hit the OP. In such a situation, its difficult, from my bias, to blame the OP for his reaction. The OP didn't, as has been pointed out, stomp the guy. He simply responded with a return punch.

Life happens quickly, usually. We normally do not have lots of time to analyse the situation...

The other day I was walking my wimp of a dog off-leash on the campus of NTU. Not only is my dog not a threat to anyone, he isn't even interested in other humans. But, some people occassionally demonstrate fear when they see him, and I take no comfort in seeing others in fear. As we turned a corner, a middle-aged couple suddenly stopped in their tracks when they saw my dog walking free and I immediately assured them that my dog will not bite them, let alone look at them. They nodded nervously and my dog and I passed them and headed for the gate to leave NTU. Just as we were about to leave, I heard the guy calling to me... "mister, mister, do you want to hear a joke?" I didn't really want to hear his joke, but I decided to humor him...

He asked, "how do you know your dog will not bite?"

I replied, "because I know my dog."

He pressed again, "but, how do you know he will not bite?"

Becoming annoyed, I reiterated, "because I know my dog."

He then smiled smugly, as though he thought himself very clever, and informed me, "you cannot know, because you are not him."

I really wasn't in the mood for this nonsense, partly because I felt confident that he would not ever speak with any of the multitude of Taiwanese people who walk visibly aggressive dogs off-leash every day at NTU but for some reason had picked me out because I am a foreign national. So, feeling annoyed, I looked at him and his wife, and I asked, "is that your wife?"

She nodded affirmatively and he replied, "yes."

I then asked him, "how do you know that she doesn't want to have sex with me?"

They stood there sort of gobsmacked. I turned around and with my wimpy dog left.

Yeah... I didn't need to be such a jagoff. But, neither did he need to be one.

I always believe, however, that if you look for trouble, it ain't difficult to find. And if you find it, well... hopefully it will not be big trouble.

Honestly, if it were me, had I hit the guy referred to in the OP's initial post, I likely would have regretted doing so... on the other hand, had I refrained from hitting the guy, I probably would have regretted not doing so.

Ah, well... I don't look for trouble... and when trouble looks big, I veer away. Works for me.

As it is, we seem to regard it as a positive objection to a reasoner that he has taken one side or the other. We regard it (in other words) as a positive objection to a reasoner that he has contrived to reach the object of his reasoning. We call a man a bigot or a slave of dogma because he is a thinker who has thought thoroughly and to a definite end.
