Forum rules
We hope that the Living in Taiwan forum will be of value to you and others. To ensure this, please note:

It is best to capitalize topics and to avoid vague titles. “Hi, I’m new” and “Help please” are examples of bad titles.

Before posting, please check the FAQ thread, and – more importantly – use the search function to ensure that your topic has not been discussed before and that there is not an existing thread you could update with your contribution.

While Living in Taiwan is a busy, wide-ranging forum, there are other specific forums for relationships, teaching, business, legal issues, animals, food, events, travel, restaurants, and so on. Check the Forumosa menu to find the most appropriate place for your post.

While it is preferable to post questions dealing with dissimilar topics in separate threads (“How Much for an Apartment in Tianmu?”, “Are There Many Foreigners in Tianmu?”), if you are a new arrival, it is possible to present numerous questions in one post, but realize that your thread will then, after two weeks, be merged into the New to Taiwan: Some Questions thread.

iTunes in Taiwan

What is the best way to register for iTunes in Taiwan?

Are there any problems for a Taiwan person to register in Taiwan?

Can they have an account and access iTunes purchases?
Still trying to understand the culture.

Did you have to use a US bank account? I had to, but I am here in China

Poagao, do you think you can buy and install applications for an iPhone even though iPhone is not available in Taiwan?

This is the reason behind my question. My friend has a hacked iPhone from the US and wants to join itunes to add applications.

yes, you can... as long as you have a TW credit card/billing address...

to see what's up for grabs, just launch iTunes, go to iTunes online store and select "Taiwan" from the drop down list on the bottom on the screen... anything you see, you can download and install on your iPhone... unfortunately, there is no music, only apps... apparently Apple is keen to back continued music piracy in Taiwan :idunno:... Also some of the significant apps are not available from the Taiwan iStore, Shezam, Google Earth, etc.. but there is *a lot* there to keep you busy...

Yeah, I've gotten quite a few apps from the iTunes store, even paid for some. It is too bad about Shazam and Google Earth, though. I'll manage, though.

My iTunes is set up to be the UK one. I looked to see what Taiwan music there is: practically none, and all the titles in English and Pinyin. I couldn't find a Taiwan category even.

So, to access Taiwanese iTunes I'd have to open a completely new account (and even then there's not much music on it)?

So do you *need* a credit card to get an iTunes store account?
Also, is there a way to change the Taiwan store to English?
